Synopsis:

An uncanny assortment of miscellaneous objects is an international artists exchange exhibition initiated by independent curators Nien-Ting Chen (Taiwan) and Jaxton Su (Singapore), bringing an assortment of random objects to the fore, in an attempt to discuss the imperative of current issues with the peculiarity of specific commodities. In light of the ubiquity of objects as multi-faceted constituents of culture, ten groups of young artists were invited to create new works based on chosen objects from their everyday life, with the aim to utilise cross-cultural observation and examination of perspectives to construct a flourishing and experimental contemporary art platform between Singapore and Taiwan.

Following its first run that successfully concluded at VT ArtSalon, Taipei in February, the Singapore exhibition will happen at Starch from 4 to 26 June 2022. An electrifying miscellany of experimental works including installations, moving images, photography and sculptures will be presented, alongside programmes including an opening reception on 4 June and an artist talk on 5 June.

With capitalism leading to the commodification of different forms and rapid digitisation blurring our boundaries between the real and the virtual, how have our ways of perceiving and defining certain objects changed? As current circumstances such as the global pandemic and international conflicts alter the realities we have grown accustomed to, what novel perspectives and solutions might objects be able to offer? Growing up in a technological world where flow of information can occur freely and widely, how do our younger generation from different cultures perceive certain objects in relation to current societal conditions?

Examining the aforementioned enquiries and in celebration of our cultural affinities, the concluding exhibition of the Singapore-Taiwan exchange project will present a curious mishmash of seemingly unrelated objects, with each work chronicling an artist's observation and commentary of current societal situations and altered realities that have suffused our world at present.

An uncanny assortment of miscellaneous objects presents recent works from Desiree Tham, Huang Shao-Ying, Hsieh Yu-Cheng, Kevin Fee, Ryan Benjamin Lee, Shih Meng-Hsin, Tang Ya-Wen, Wilfred Lim and Ye Sian-Jie. The exhibition is supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government; Taiwan National Culture and Arts Foundation; National Arts Council, Singapore; VT ArtSalon; and Starch.
