Synopsis:

Han Ya Juan (b. 1980, China, lives and works in Beijing) belongs to the new Chinese Contemporary Art movement. Her work encompasses oil paintings, VR and video installations. Her ealry work primarily explores the issues faced by the younger generation who grew up during the period of rapid social transition during China's opening up and reform. The work examines the conflict between traditional values and consumerism under the influence of globalisation. In Han's recent works, she focuses on female identity and self-awareness in the age of information, exploring the complicated relationship between the real and virtual world, leading to new reflection on future ecology and human nature. Han Ya Juan has previously held numerous solo exhibitions worldwide including: China, USA, UK, Japan, Netherlands, Italy, Australia and Spain. Her works have also participated in over a hundred international group exhibitions and biennales. Han's works are collected by private and institutional art collections, such as The Uli Sigg Collection, Karl Lagerfeld Collection, Luciano Benetton Collection, China Academy of Art, BSI Foundation and M+ Museum. In 2018, she participated in the Women Artists in Contemporary China research program conducted by Tate Gallery's research center.
