Synopsis:

Come visit our beautiful and cosy-intimate Beach Hut set up on the sand and by the waters of Punggol Beach on November 16th 2019 at 6/7/8/9pm, as we present to you Beach Burden Bliss; a double bill by Desert Wine's Comfort Theatre Series (Railway Records 2019, Scandal for Seniors 2019, Agnes of God 2018, Dinner with Friends 2017, Emily of Emerald Hill 2016).

Beach Burden Bliss is in celebration of the Singapore Bicentennial and is Desert Wine's last stage offering for 2019.

In this double-bill site-specific production, we will present two original plays: Burden and Bliss by Playwright-Producer-Director Sharmila Melissa Yogalingam (please see full theatrical credits below).

Burden tells the real life story of World War II survivor, Chan Cheng Yean, who survived the Sook Ching massacre that took place in 1942, when truckloads of Chinese men who were suspected of anti-Japanese activities were rounded up and mercilessly shot at 3 different beaches, including Punggol Beach.

Chan miraculously survived.

Witness his story, in this retelling of a horrific time in Singapore's history.

Bliss on the other hand is a light hearted comedy about a family who waits for some overseas-based family members to come to dinner at a Punggol restaurant. However the expected visitors are late, and whilst waiting, the family unexpectedly reveals plenty of scandalous secrets about themselves.

Taking place at the site-specific location of Punggol Beach itself, and in a cosy-intimate beach hut, our original plays Burden is a re-enactment of a real life story, and Bliss is a story inspired by real life.
