Synopsis:

Join independent environmental photographer and writer Arati Kumar-Rao for a one-day masterclass on the role of visual storytelling and social advocacy.

Arati's work focuses on issues underreported in the mainstream media, and her approach is long-term, following "the lives of people in landscapes over seasons, years, across governments, policy changes, and land-use change". Since 2014, she has been documenting the slow violence of ecological degradation and climate change on ecosystems and livelihoods along South Asia's rivers.

This workshop is ideal for intermediate to advanced photographers with an interest in working independently and in-depth projects and/or those who use photography and incorporate different media, to document change, highlight issues, develop insights and advocate for social causes.

Some of the topics in this master class include:
– Planning your documentary photography project: sources, subjects, gear
– Incorporating other media with photography into your storytelling
– Finding the right outlet for your work
– Sustaining long-term projects

Course Overview
• Introduction to documentary photography
• Discussion about Arati's career
• Review of participants' previous works and areas of interest
• Planning your project: sources, subjects, gear
• Outdoor shoot with a specific assignment
• Using photography in a social advocacy campaign

This talk is part of Stories That Matter 2017. Learn more about this programme here.

Arati will also give a public lecture on her career on Thur, 16 Mar, 7.30pm – 9pm.
