WAGNER – Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
BEETHOVEN – Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73 ‘Emperor’
SCHUMANN – Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 97 ‘Rhenish’
Arnaldo Cohen, last here for the Singapore International Piano Festival in 2011, takes on Beethoven’s most popular piano concerto, described at its premiere as “one of the composer’s most original works”. Chronologically the last of Schumann’s symphonies to be written, the Third was composed during a happy period spent in Düsseldorf, on the banks of the Rhine, where Schumann had accepted the post of municipal music director. The symphony was given its name as a token of appreciation for the welcome he felt from the Rhinelanders.
